José van Kleef
José van Kleef (1956, Utrecht) mainly works with human, animal and natural subjects and tries to express the longing for a world that no longer exists, a resistance against hectic modern life. Van Kleef paints a world that she would like to see around her. She does not execute a pre-fixed plan, but creates that world during the painting process. Each painting begins with an abstract colour composition; she starts to wipe with brush and knife on the panel without a plan. Thus the colour is the beginning of everything and very important for Van Kleef. From the sturdy painted panel, animals, mythical creatures and archetypical figures slowly grow into existence.
