Henk van Kalken

Henk van Kalken (Amsterdam, 1960) started 10 years ago exhibiting in the Spiegelkwartier in Amsterdam. After that he stepped over to wellknown galleries.

Van Kalken is a selftaught artist, he spent a lot of time developing his painting technics, mainly by studying the Old Masters. A painting needs to be authentic and to be using the material and technics optimal.

Henk van Kalken paints in egg-tempera and oil on linen. He starts with a grisaille, to get the form right. Then in different layers paint, he adds the colours and the details.

He paints figurative and flirts with surrealism. Thoughts, memories of situations or persons, close to him, are often his inspiration.

The idea for a painting mostly appears in a split second, the details are designed later on. With his paintings he pictures his own inner world. The paintings are much more complex, than too be seen at first sight. A lot of the times it looks like it is saying the opposite from the real meaning. It is clear that Nature is a big inspiration in all his works.
